Description:
Abstract Optoelectronic devices that operate on the basis of tunneling of the charge carriers through energy barrier are being implanted as terahertz oscillators attractive for visible light communications (VLC). The promising VLC devices are in the focus of technology as it allow data transport via natural light and as it is able to transfer data packages up to 600 Mbit/s. For these reasons, here in this work we report a new type of modeling that allow the control of the value of the tunneling current as function of biasing voltage for various types of optical thin film layers. The modeling include the foundation of the photonic energy band gap, the energy band tails through the gap for a single and a bilayer, the reflectivity spectra of such layers is also used for determining the dielectric constant spectra and optical signal quality. The optical signal conversion to electrical is modeled assuming energy bands of Richardson-Schottkey electric field assisted tunneling. The energy bands which are determined from the optical modeling are also used to design the band diagram of the proposed device. The dielectric data is used to control the depletion layer width of the device. The modeling suggests the region of application and the preferable biasing of the VLC device
